Wal-mart Associates’ Sustainability Plan donates

CRANBROOK, BC… Wal-mart Canada has recently initiated a new associates program entitled My Sustainability Plan (MSP) through its stores across Canada with a focus on reducing waste and energy and to drive the growth and availability of sustanable products and choices. The plan is based on three pillars – my planet, my health and my life.

Each Wal-Mart store has a MSP captain, Carolin Hockley, along with the members of the Cranbrook MSP team, also set some personal goals and sustainable initiatives which included recycling, eating healthy, quitting smoking and more.

The 3183 Cranbrook team made up of Carolin, Brad, Deb, Richard, Shelley, Judi-Lynn, Sharita and Sandy decided to focus on eating healthy and also decided to include a component of raising money for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s Pediatric Toy Closet.

The MSP team hosted an in-house Build a Salad event. Wal-mart associates made a $4.00 donation for “all you can eat” salad and also had a chance to put in an entry to win a surprise bag of sustainable items valued at $50-70. The salad event was an overwhelming success with Carolin and her team raising $600 for the toy closet. Their passion to do something for kids didn’t stop there as they then asked Wal-mart Canada to consider a matching grant resulting in a contribution of $1,200 in funds and an additional four boxes filled to the brim of stuffies, stickers, bubbles and assorted toys.

“Words cannot express how much this means to the pediatric ward and to sick kids. Wal-mart’s donation makes caring for children throughout the hospital just a little more positive and brings smiles to little faces that normally would be frowning in such circumstances. I also recognize that this donation is a result of a team effort and want to thank each and every staff member that helped make this a reality. You are all heroes,” shares Sara Jolie, RN on the Pediatric Unit.

Toys in the toys closet are given to kids to take home after a stay at the hospital. The items are new and the closet offers something for every age from 1-18 years. The pediatric nursing team monitors the closet and utilizes the funds to upgrade items as and when needed. The toy closet is not just for kids in the pediatrics unit but available for kids who are in the intensive care unit or emergency departments.

East Kootenay Foundation for Health is proud to work with Carolin Hockley and the Cranbrook MSP team making a difference in health care.
